Georgia Writers honor Crandell
Doug Crandell's "The All Industrial Motel" is the Georgia Writers Association pick for Georgia Author of the Year in the creative, non-fiction memoir category.
He topped five authors to win the award, including former President Jimmy Carter for his memoir, "Beyond the White House."
Crandell, 40, has grabbed readers' attention with quirky titles, like "Pig Boy's Wicked Bird," "Flawless Skin of Ugly People" and this year's "Hairdos of the Mildly Depressed."
He has won awards from the Sherwood Anderson Foundation and the Hohenberg Foundation, and is the 2005 Goldfarb Fellow at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts.
Crandell, the director of Supported Employment at the Cobb Community Services Board, has worked 13 years helping people with cognitive disabilities find work and start their own businesses.
"Whether it's writing about substance abuse or people who are considered outcast, I find my job helps to create convincing stories about addiction, disability and difference," he said.
He is helping the Community Services Board start a book fair that will take place Oct. 3-4 on the Marietta Square.
